Joan Martínez Peidro

Ceramista · Fundador

Joan Martínez Peidro dedicated 41 years of his life to the ceramic craft. From the wood-fired kiln to the electric kiln, he built a workshop that is a reference in Penedès. He retired in 2010, and today his son sporadically continues the craft, keeping the fire of tradition alive.

A family of potters

Ceramics as a family legacy.

The ceramic tradition in the Martínez family runs deep. The Terra i Foc workshop has been a meeting point where the knowledge of the craft has been passed down through generations. Each piece that leaves the workshop carries the imprint of a family that has made earth and fire their way of life.

The workshop

From the potter's workshop to the ceramist's studio.

Evolution

What started as a traditional potter's workshop has evolved into a contemporary ceramist's studio where ancient techniques coexist with new tools. The original wood-fired kiln, manual wheels and new electric kilns share a space that has grown over the years.

Structure

The workshop has dedicated spaces for each phase of the process: clay storage, kneading and wheel area, drying area, glazing and finally the kiln area. Every corner of the workshop serves a specific purpose, the result of decades of experience.

Constructions

The workshop constructions have adapted to changing needs. From the primitive wood-fired kiln built with refractory bricks to the modern electrical installations, each expansion tells a chapter of the workshop's story.

Collaborations

Artists, artisans and commissions that have shaped the journey.

Over the years, Terra i Foc has collaborated with artists, designers and artisans from various fields. Each collaboration has been an exchange — a way to learn and create pieces that could not arise from a single perspective.

Glossary

Terms of the ceramic craft.

Clay
Natural material extracted from the earth. Mixed with water it becomes plastic and can be shaped. Once fired in the kiln it becomes hard and permanent.
Glaze
Vitreous layer that fuses onto the piece during firing. Provides color, texture and waterproofing.
Wood kiln
Traditional kiln that uses wood as fuel. Ash and flame create unique, unrepeatable effects on the glaze.
Wheel
Machine that spins the clay while the artisan shapes it with their hands. Used to create symmetrical, rotational pieces.
Stoneware
Type of clay fired at high temperature (1250-1300 °C). Once fired it is waterproof and very strong.
Bisque
First firing of the piece without glaze. Makes it porous and ready to receive glaze.
Refractory
Material that withstands very high temperatures without deforming. Used to build kilns.
